UKGC Launches Public Consultation on Online Slot Redesign
The UK Gambling Commission is currently examining the possibility of altering the mechanics of online slot games. In response, the regulatory body has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on whether changes are needed to better protect players from potential gambling harm.
According to data from the GC, about 1.2% of adults in Britain are spending excessive amounts on gambling activities. Specifically, certain features found in slot games have been identified as high-risk factors for individuals experiencing gambling harm.
The UKGC has stated that elements such as speed of play and frequency of betting opportunities can contribute to compulsive gaming behaviors. As a result, they are taking action after previous attempts at reforming slot game design were unsuccessful.
Work Group Fails to Implement Changes
Despite appointing Playtech and Scientific Games in their efforts, the UKGC has deemed their progress insufficient. The objectives given to these companies included limiting or removing specific features from slot games, such as turbo or slam stops which have been identified as problematic. Additionally, a minimum game cycle was supposed to be implemented.
Regulators also recommended removing split-screen games altogether. When asked for further explanation on these decisions, the UKGC simply stated that they were dedicated to reducing gambling harms even further.
Some industry organizations have criticized these actions by claiming that too many restrictions are being imposed without sufficient justification. They argue that the number of individuals experiencing gambling harm is relatively low and the impact on the industry would be significant.
Combining Public Opinion and Work Group Recommendations
Despite these criticisms, the UKGC remains open to suggestions and feedback, including from Playtech and Scientific Games. The regulator will also consider proposals from all licensed operators, taking into account input from both industry professionals and companies that may be affected by these changes.
One of the proposed changes is to revise the definitions of online slot games within the remote gambling and software technical standards (RTS). The industry is seeking to limit players to only one active game at a time.
This change aims to address situations where some players use split-screen features during their online casino sessions, resulting in significant losses due to excessive auto-play usage. Another proposed measure is implementing a minimum game speed of 2.5 seconds, allowing players to still enjoy gameplay while slowing down overall pace for safer gaming experiences.
The Commission is also discussing how these measures will be enforced. Independent testing agencies will assess compliance with these regulations, with potential consequences ranging from restricting specific titles or entire portfolios of non-compliant companies.
